Blue Economy in Indian Sundarbans

The basic root of "Blue Economy" is very recent and originated from the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. At the core of the concept is a clear demarcation between socio-economic development and environmental degradation, which is how it was traditionally perceived as a global status quo. The concept of Blue Economy has now been aligned with the economic and trade activities, and emerges from a need to integrate conservation and sustainability in the management of living and non-living resources of the marine environment. The sustainability aspect makes provision for the inclusion of activities based on patterns of consumption and replenishment whilst generating minimum or zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fundamental in the process of executing the activities and livelihood pattern. Ecofriendly alternative livelihood based on mangrove resources of Indian Sundarbans tagged with Total Quality Management (TQM) is the hallmark of the Book.  The present book provides a cross-sectoral, multi-disciplinary assessment of different verticals of Blue Economy with special thrust on the alternative livelihood, based on the mangrove gene pool of Indian Sundarbans. Ground-zero data on relevant environmental parameters that influence the growth and survival of biotic resource base in Indian Sundarbans have made the book stand on a strong base.
