What does "treat your college essay like a PR exercise" mean?

College essays require strategic self-presentation. You are both the subject and the marketer: your job is to teach admissions officers how to perceive you. Strong positioning cannot replace grades, coursework, or extracurricular involvement but a considered angle optimizes what already exists.
