Where's Calder?

Ruth Calder disappears just as the bodies start turning up.

Former off-books personnel tied to her past are being killed across Europe in a sequence too deliberate to ignore. Barcelona. Marseille. Trieste. Zagreb. Bucharest. Each death pulls another old secret into daylight, and each new witness raises the same ugly possibility: Calder is either the next target or the hidden reason the list exists at all.

So he follows the trail across stations, service corridors, safe flats, ferry routes, and temporary hold rooms, trying to find Calder before the next killing lands and before official channels decide she belongs on the suspect board instead of the rescue lane. But the deeper Mike digs, the worse the old truth becomes. The man behind the murders is not simply taking revenge. He is forcing open a buried triage decision that Calder helped hide - one that determined who would be moved, who would be abandoned, and who would spend the rest of their lives carrying the lie.

Mike's choice is clear even when the truth is not: stop the killings, keep Calder alive, and bring the murderer in under law. But when he finally wins that fight, Calder makes a choice of her own that turns the arrest into ashes and leaves Mike facing the one outcome he cannot justify away: the ally he kept defending may have crossed the line for good.
