Vlad the Impaler was born into a family that history had placed between two empires. His father governed Wallachia, a small principality on the edge of Christian Europe, with the Kingdom of Hungary pressing from the northwest and the Ottoman Empire from the south. Both powers claimed its rulers as subjects, and both were prepared to remove any prince who disappointed them.
Vlad III Dracula grew up inside that contest. As a boy he was handed to the Ottoman sultan as a hostage, and he received an education in the language, faith, and military methods of the empire his family would spend decades resisting. He saw his father executed and his elder brother killed. He later found refuge with the Hungarian commander responsible for those deaths. He won the throne of Wallachia in a duel with a cousin, and he refused the sultan's demand for tribute in a way that Europe remembered for centuries.
*Vlad the Impaler* follows his life from the uncertain details of his birth to the disputed circumstances of his death. Readers will meet the Order of the Dragon, the origin of the name Dracula, and the world of fifteenth-century Wallachia. The book covers the fall of Constantinople, the crusade that followed it, and the campaigns of 1462, including the night attack on the sultan's camp. It also covers his years of captivity in Hungary and his brief return to power.
The book gives equal attention to what happened after his death. Early pamphleteers embellished his story, Romanian nationalists later recast him as a patriot, and Bram Stoker's novel borrowed his name for a vampire. This history separates what the evidence supports from what legend has added, and it places a controversial ruler within the culture of violence that shaped him.
Readers will come away with:
- A clear understanding of the Ottoman and Hungarian struggle for the Balkans
- Context for the Order of the Dragon, the Janissaries, and the Wallachian boyars
- A balanced look at his reputation, drawing on the views of many scholars
- Insight into how the man became the legend
This book is written for readers of medieval history, Eastern European history, and anyone curious about the real prince behind the name Dracula.
