Aus Sicht der sozialpsychologischen Wahlforschung sind neben der Parteiidentifikation politische Sachfragenorientierungen und Kandidatenwahrnehmungen zentral für die individuelle Wahlentscheidung. Im Zuge der gesellschaftspolitischen Wandlungsprozesse stellt sich jedoch zunehmend die Frage, ob generelle Entwicklungstrends der Bedeutung dieser Faktoren für die Wahlentscheidung - wie etwa die Personalisierung des Wahlverhaltens - festzustellen sind. Gleichzeitig können konstellationsabhängige Einwände in Bezug auf kontinuierliche Trends angebracht werden. Ist jede Wahl anders? War etwa die Bundestagswahl 1990 nur eine "Themenwahl", die als Referendum über die deutsche Einheit anzusehen ist, während die Bundestagswahl 2002 als massenmedial inszenierte "Wahl der Kandidaten" zu charakterisieren ist? Empirisch untersucht wird dieses Zusammenspiel der "Trends and Constellations" für die Bundestagswahlen von 1990 bis 2005 in der Gegenüberstellung von Ost- und Westdeutschland. Dabei ist festzustellen, dass auch 15 Jahre nach der Wiedervereinigung noch markante Unterschiede hinsichtlich der politischen Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen von Ost- und Westdeutschen bestehen.
