They are not keeping it from you. It is not finished yet, and being asked for it is the thing stopping it finishing.

Asking a child what is wrong requires four things of them at once. To know what happened. To know how they feel about it. To find words for that. And to say those words out loud, to a face that is waiting.

Adults do all four so quickly that they feel like one thing. For a child they are four separate jobs, and the last two are much harder than the first two.

Then there is the timing. The question almost always arrives at the gate, or in the first ten minutes home - precisely the point at which they have least left. And there is being looked at: a direct question with eye contact is a small spotlight. It says this matters, I am waiting, and the answer had better be worth the attention.

So it comes out four hours later instead. In the bath. In the car. With the light off. Almost always while you are doing something else and not looking at them.

What is in it:

  • Where it actually comes out, and why the pattern is consistent enough to plan around
  • Why asking again slightly differently reads as pressure, however gently each version is put
  • Why guessing out loud gets you a wrong answer that ends the questioning
  • Side by side, not opposite - the single most reliable thing in the book
  • Saying a thing instead of asking one, and asking about somebody else
  • Letting the first thing they say be small, because it is the audition for the main thing
  • Taking what arrives without going up a gear
  • Which of you actually needs the answer, and how instantly children can tell
  • What happens to it afterwards - who it gets repeated to, and whether it comes back in a fortnight
  • The sibling who tells you everything, and why that is a difference in processing speed rather than closeness

The aim is not to get them talking. It is to make sure that when the thing is ready, there is somewhere for it to go.

Whether they tell you a serious thing years from now is not decided by a technique. It is decided by what happened the last forty times they told you something small.

"Be busy. Be near. Wait."

For the parent, not the child. Sixty-four pages, small enough for a coat pocket.

This book supports everyday emotional awareness. It is not a screening tool and it is not a substitute for professional guidance.

From the Little Signals world: quiet stories and tools that help small humans notice their signals and find their way back to steady. No quick fixes. No hype. Regulation before optimisation.
