The Stories Behind the Hymns

The Stories Behind the Hymns

52 Hymns. 52 Stories. A Year of Faith, History, and Inspiration.

Behind every beloved hymn is a story-and behind every story is a person whose faith, sorrow, hope, or experience helped shape the words generations of Christians still sing today.

A father who lost all four of his daughters to the sea. A dying clergyman in a small Devon fishing town. A blind woman who wrote thousands of songs. A former slave-ship captain whose life was transformed by faith. Their hymns have endured for centuries, yet the remarkable stories behind them are often forgotten.

The Stories Behind the Hymns brings these lives and legacies into the light through 52 beloved hymns, with one chapter for each week of the year. Discover the people, circumstances, and moments of inspiration that gave birth to some of Christianity's most treasured songs.

Each chapter explores:

• The Story Behind the Hymn: Discover the historical events and personal experiences that inspired its creation, accompanied by historical photographs and engravings.

• Fact, Legend, and History: Explore popular accounts, examine conflicting versions, and discover what the historical record actually supports.

• The Hymn's Words: Read the lyrics wherever they are in the public domain and free to reproduce.

• Scripture and Reflection: Connect the hymn's message to Scripture and carry a thoughtful reflection into the week ahead.

Written for anyone who has ever wondered where the songs of their faith came from, this book offers more than a collection of historical accounts. It is an invitation to see familiar hymns through new eyes, understand the lives behind their lyrics, and rediscover the faith that has carried their messages across generations.

Whether you love church history, enjoy singing the great hymns of the Christian faith, or simply want a meaningful weekly devotional, The Stories Behind the Hymns will deepen your appreciation for the songs that continue to inspire worship around the world.

Every hymn has a history. Every story has a lesson. And every song has a reason it still matters.
