The San José Galleon

The San José Galleon: Billions in Sunken Silver by Peter H. Fairbanks tells the gripping story of the "Holy Grail of Shipwrecks"-a treasure-laden Spanish galleon lost in the Caribbean in 1708. Flagship of the Treasure Fleet, the San José carried an immense cargo of silver, gold, and emeralds when she met her fiery end off Barú in a clash with British warships during the War of the Spanish Succession. Her destruction sent billions in wealth to the ocean floor, where she lay undisturbed for centuries, becoming both legend and obsession.

Fairbanks traces the ship's journey from the silver mines of Potosí and the emerald fields of Colombia to her final voyage out of Cartagena. He explores how the wreck became a symbol of empire's rise and fall, a target of modern treasure hunters, and the center of bitter legal battles between nations, corporations, and archaeologists. From early salvage dreams and Cold War technologies to the dramatic 2015 rediscovery announced by the Colombian government, the San José has emerged as more than a shipwreck: she is a contested prize, a war grave, and a mirror of human ambition.

Drawing on historical records, eyewitness reports, maritime archaeology, and modern geopolitics, this book goes beyond the glitter of treasure to reveal the deeper story of empire, memory, and mystery beneath the sea. Perfect for readers captivated by shipwrecks, lost fortunes, and the drama of history, The San José Galleon: Billions in Sunken Silver brings to life the enduring allure of a ship that, even three centuries later, refuses to be forgotten.
