This book is the first poetic biography of Su Shi written in English, focusing primarily on the making of "Su Shi the poet." The author examines and closely reads Su Shi's poetry within the dual contexts of the classical poetic tradition and the intellectual history of the Northern Song Dynasty, accurately tracing the evolutionary trajectory of his poetic style and revealing how his distinctive poetic expression came into being. The author argues that the formation of Su Shi's poetic style was a dynamic process of continuous adjustment and creative transformation, ultimately achieving a perfect fusion of thought and art in his Huangzhou poems. It was at this point that Su Shi truly transformed into "the poet Su Dongpo."
