This paper reads James Joyce's The Dead as a critique of colonial and bourgeois ideology, arguing that the paralysis of Dublin is not spiritual, but materially produced by economic stagnation and the ideological grip of a compromised middle class. Beyond readings of Gabriel's realization, tradition vs. modernity, the study asks three questions of the story: How does The Dead depict the way colonial economic structures shape and distort the consciousness of the Irish middle class? In what ways does Gabriel's identity crisis reflect the ideological contradictions produced by colonial and class hegemony? Why does The Dead depict paralysis as a systemic rather than individual condition? Employing a Neo-Marxist perspective, based on Gramsci, Althusser and Williams, this paper exposes how Gabriel's investment in English culture disables his consciousness, and the party of the Morkan sisters as a symbol of middle class stuck in colonial subservience and cultural illusion. Michael Furey is a life that Gabriel's bourgeois world cannot contain. Ultimately, Joyce depicts paralysis as a system that ensnares both colonizer and colonized, resulting only in a painful awakening that cannot undo the harm already done.
