Serena Alcott enters Henry Vale's classroom already judged.

She is a siren, rare, feared, and required to wear a resonance guard over her mouth so her voice can be heard only after it has been filtered. The school calls it a safety accommodation. Serena calls it what everyone is too polite to say.

Henry has been warned not to fear her. His wife, Lydia, a doctor in mythic-species medicine, gives him better advice: do not pity her.

Serena is angry, clever, and difficult on purpose. She knows what people expect from a siren, and sometimes she becomes exactly that because being hated for something she chooses feels better than being feared for something she cannot change. But Henry refuses to treat her as a monster, a victim, or a lesson for everyone else.

In a school built on careful policies, quiet prejudice, and polite discomfort, Serena must decide whether her voice can belong to her again.
