The Monument Maker is an existential drama that confronts the last thirty-six hours in one man's life.
Alan Westicott follows in his grandfather's footsteps and, learning from the stone, becomes a skilled mason. The older Westicott carved pieces of granite for castle walls and battlements, but Alan carves only one thing, the only thing that speaks to his native senses: tombstones. Self-taught, Alan designs the most beautiful monuments people have ever seen.
But Allan Westicott doesn't just design the tombstones. He spends hours and hours talking to the people who need the monuments, and then carves their stories into the granite. He condenses an entire life onto each page of marble, bringing their stories together forever.
His fame deepens with every new stone that's taken to the cemetery. It's not long before people from all over the city come to his little shop in his garage. Families and individuals who've lost a loved one come to Alan to ask him- to beg him- to carve one of his magical stones for for the people beneath the ground. Yet Allan can only carve so many stones, and there are only so many stories he can hear.
So Alan collects all of the people's stories and writes them down. He puts them all together in a little book, and then tries to publish the collection so the stories are never forgotten.
