Two Asian giants. 1.4 billion people each. Seventy years. Two entirely different paths.
The Mirror Next Door begins at the baggage carousel of Toronto Pearson Airport-saris and black suitcases, Indian immigrants and Chinese immigrants, passing each other in the same city yet living in completely different worlds. It takes you to a tech park in Bangalore late at night, following a software product manager and a Dalit cleaner, to see the invisible glass wall between them. It unpacks India's "coexistence without contradiction": the world's fourth-largest economy alongside the largest population of absolute poverty; a top-tier IT outsourcing industry alongside the most entrenched caste discrimination; a digital payment revolution alongside 200 million people who cannot afford three meals a day.
Then it digs deeper-back to 1500 BCE, when the Aryans crossed the Khyber Pass, and back to the moment when Confucius and the Buddha first set down their teachings. Geography, religion, history, conquest, education, governance, water resources, borders, economics, global strategy. Twenty chapters, from the street to the temple, from the tech park to the hidden rivers of caste. No judgment. No polemics. No praise. Just observation.
This is not a book about who is better. It is a mirror. It reflects why two giants, so similar in size, ended up living so differently.
