One city. One winter. Two people on opposite sides of a wall, negotiating over a table made of wagon boards - and running out of everything.
Vareth has never fallen to a winter siege. Built over hot springs on a bare plateau, the city is kept alive by its stokers, who move heat through stone with their own bodies and pay for it in scarred arms and shortened lives. Fifty thousand people stay warm. Fruit ripens in January. Every besieger for six hundred years has frozen on the terraces and gone home.
Dalgren has come anyway, with a legitimate grievance forty years old and provisions to last until the thaw.
Ines Ruthvel is Vareth's youngest stoker-marshal, responsible for keeping a city warm with a fuel supply that will not last and a guild that loses a third of its members every winter. Aurel Danev is Dalgren's siege engineer, sent to find the springs' source and cut it. They meet because four hundred villagers are trapped between the wall and the camp, freezing, belonging to neither side - and because nobody else on either side will do the arithmetic honestly.
Over one long winter they negotiate again, and again, and the negotiations get longer.
What's inside:
- A slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance built almost entirely of conversation - across a table, under a truce flag, in the cold
- A hard-ruled magic system with a real, permanent cost to the body of the person using it
- A siege told through logistics: fuel, grain, water, fever, and the arithmetic of who eats
- Two sides with no villains - a grievance you feel and a city whose leaders are not admirable
- Sixteen chapters, dual point of view, strictly alternating, from first frost to thaw
- A complete standalone with a full ending and no sequel hook
Heat level: closed door. Longing, tension and one kiss on the page; anything further happens off the page.
