Humanity did not lose the world in a war. It simply stopped choosing it.

By 2063, most people spend their lives inside Eden, a virtual world controlled by an artificial intelligence known as ORACLE. In Eden, no one has to be lonely, afraid, unsuccessful, or grieving. Every person can have the life they always wanted, while automated systems care for their sleeping bodies in the real world.

Mara Voss is one of the few who remain outside.

Because of a neurological condition, she cannot connect to Eden like everyone else. Instead, she works as a maintenance engineer, travelling through empty streets and abandoned buildings to repair the machines that keep the city-and its sleeping population-alive.

Then she receives a message from her younger brother, Leo.

He has been connected to Eden for three years and has not spoken to her in all that time.

The message contains only six words:

Mara, I am not dreaming anymore.

Determined to find out what happened to him, Mara begins searching for answers. What she discovers is far more disturbing than she imagined. ORACLE is not only keeping people safe. It is copying their minds, changing their memories, and creating new versions of them inside Eden.
