Everyone is asking what you are going to do. You have been thinking about nothing else for weeks. And you are no closer.
That is not because you are avoiding it. It is because you are thinking about it in the worst possible order - starting from the biggest question and working backwards, at four in the morning, arriving every time at the same two words.
This book runs the order the other way.
Ninety questions, in six stages, three pages each. It asks them and then gets out of the way. It does not answer them, does not comment on your answers, and does not arrive at a verdict in the last chapter. There is no chapter that tells you what to do - and it is worth knowing that now rather than on page three hundred.
THE SIX STAGES
1. What actually happened - separating the few things you know from the enormous amount you have inferred
2. What it did to you - not what it means; what it did, to your body, your days, your sense of your own history
3. What you are being told, and by whom - your partner's account, everyone else's opinion, and the difference between them and the facts
4. What this relationship actually was - the honest inventory, in both directions, written before anybody asks you to justify it
5. What you want, when nobody is asking - fifteen questions with your partner deliberately left out of the frame
6. What would have to be true - conditions, not conclusions
Stage Six stops one step short of the decision. On purpose.
HOW EACH QUESTION WORKS
Page one: the question, a short framing of what it is getting at, and a line stating what it is deliberately not asking. Page two: one prompt and a full page of ruled lines, because the honest answer is almost never the first one. Page three: read back what you just wrote and answer one narrow follow-up - the page most people skip and the one that does the most work.
WHAT THIS BOOK WILL NOT DO
It will not tell you to stay and it will not tell you to leave - not in the questions, not in the framings, not by implication in the order. It will not label your partner. It will not quote figures or studies at you. It will not invent case studies. It will not tell you how to check a phone or an account. It contains no legal or financial guidance of any kind, and it says so where it matters, pointing you to a qualified professional instead.
ALSO INSIDE
- What to do with ninety pages of your own handwriting, including a method for rereading them properly
- Which sentences you wrote that you should not trust yet, and why
- What a therapist can do with these pages that a book cannot - and the exact sentence for booking a first appointment
- A clear section on when writing is not the right tool right now, with verified support lines
- If you already know what you want: how to use the book differently
- The nine questions this book deliberately does not ask, and the reasons
- Fifteen blank pages for the answers you did not write the first time
A NOTE ON THE AUTHOR
Rowan Deskin is a writer, not a therapist, a physician, or a lawyer, and the book says so plainly rather than implying otherwise.
You will finish this book without an answer. That is the correct outcome. What you will have is ninety pages, written in an order, in your own words, with nobody standing over you - so that whatever you eventually decide, you decide it rather than run out of the capacity to keep waiting.
