Some records do not describe the past. They prepare it.
Ilen Voss has spent most of his life knowing that his heart beats on the wrong side.
Years after doctors first taught him what it meant to be classified as an anomaly, Ilen is working on the demolition of an abandoned municipal building when he discovers something the official plans insist does not exist: a sealed stairway leading to an unregistered archive.
Inside are coded files, photographs and fragments of a forgotten system known as The Assignment Programme - a programme that appears to have done more than observe children and families. It may have decided which lives were considered acceptable, which paths people were expected to follow, and what happened when someone refused to fit.
Then Ilen sees a photograph of a boy who may be his father.
As archivist Elyse Maren struggles to preserve what remains, the organisations responsible for the site begin doing something far more effective than simply destroying evidence: they rename it, reclassify it and place it beyond reach.
And while Ilen searches for proof, his growing connection with fellow worker Mika forces him to confront another question - how much of a life is truly our own, and how much has already been written for us?
The Assignment Programme is a haunting literary mystery about identity, bureaucracy, memory and the quiet violence of systems that decide what counts as truth.
Because sometimes the most dangerous way to erase a person is not to destroy the record.
It is to write the record first.
