THAI GHOSTS: How Thais Live with the Spirit World
Do Thai people really believe in ghosts? And why are ghosts still such an important part of Thai culture?
You can call me Ning. I'm a Thai writer who grew up hearing ghost stories from family members, friends, and people around me. Some of those stories were frightening. Others were strange, mysterious, or difficult to explain. Several people close to me have even claimed to encounter ghosts themselves.
But here's something interesting. I've never seen a ghost in my life. Not even once.
So why did I decide to write a book about Thai ghosts?
Because in Thailand, ghosts are much more than frightening figures in horror movies or stories told late at night. They are deeply connected with our history, culture, religion, traditions, folklore and everyday life.
If you have ever visited Thailand, you may have noticed small spirit houses outside homes, hotels, shops, and office buildings. You may have seen offerings placed beneath large trees, or shrines where people come to pray and ask for protection or good fortune. These are all part of the way many Thai people live with the spirit world.
In this book, I want to introduce you to the many different kinds of Thai ghosts and spirits, from the familiar to the frightening. You'll discover:
Household and ancestral spirits believed to protect families, homes, and communities.
Nature spirits associated with forests, mountains, ancient trees, and mysterious places.
Famous Thai ghosts, including Krasue, Krahang, Phi Pop, Pret, and the legendary Mae Nak Phra Khanong.
Ghosts connected with magic and supernatural practices, including Kuman Thong and Luk Krok.
Traditional rituals, spirit mediums, and local festivals that continue to reflect Thailand's spirit beliefs.
Ghost stories in Thai history, literature, movies, and popular culture, including how these beliefs have changed over generations.
I also explore how ghosts appeared in old Siamese laws, Thai History, folklore, how supernatural beliefs became part of Thai literature, and why ghost stories remain so popular in Thailand today. Some stories have been passed down through generations, while others come from personal experiences shared by people close to me.
I am not trying to prove whether ghosts really exist. But Thai ghosts do have a real presence in the stories, beliefs, and collective consciousness of Thai people. And even today, Thai people continue to live alongside these beliefs as part of their everyday lives.
You don't have to believe in ghosts to enjoy this book. But if you want to understand Thailand beyond its temples, beaches, food, and famous tourist attractions, I believe these stories will help you see another side of Thai life.
Welcome to the world of Thai ghosts.
