Dieses Buch beschreibt den Wandel des Choreographie-Begriffs, der sich durch die Improvisationspraxis im künstlerischen Tanz des 20. Jahrhunderts vollzogen hat. Improvisatorische Verfahren kennzeichnen die Arbeiten von zeitgenössischen Choreographen, die die Ästhetik des Tanzes am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts entscheidend prägen, wie etwa Trisha Brown, Steve Paxton, William Forsythe, Amanda Miller oder Jonathan Burrows, um nur wenige zu nennen. Zentrale Fragestellung der Untersuchung ist dabei nicht nur, wie im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts mit Improvisation im Tanz umgegangen wird, sondern vor allem, wie die Formen in einer Improvisation entstehen und welche Strukturen sich für die Formen verantwortlich zeigen.Ziel der Studie ist es, zum einen die Praxis und den Begriffder künstlerischen Tanzimprovisation auszudifferenzieren und zum anderen die Formenentstehung der Improvisation aufzudecken. Das Buch leistet damit einen Beitrag zur wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnis in Tanzforschung und Tanzpädagogik.»Die Verknüpfung der Darstellung von Geschichte mit der Einsicht in theoretische Aspekte, künstlerische Verfahrensweisen und die Vermittlung künstlerischer Tanzimprovisation machen die Arbeit zu einem richtungsweisenden Mustertyp tanzwissenschaftlicher Herangehensweise und Darstellungsart.« (Die Jury, Tanzwissenschaftspreis NRW 2006)
