Systems Thinking in Libraries

Libraries today are being asked to do more with less—while also navigating growing complexity, political division, and public scrutiny. From book bans and legislative threats to staff burnout, shifting technologies, and uncertain funding streams, library professionals at all levels are feeling the pressure. The problems libraries face are no longer isolated or simple; they are systemic. Systems Thinking in Libraries offers a timely and empowering response. It invites library staff, managers, and leaders to step back, reflect, and look deeper—not just at what’s happening, but why. Through the lens of systems thinking, readers will learn to identify root causes, see patterns, facilitate meaningful dialogue, and respond to disruption with purpose and clarity. Grounded in three guiding practices—articulating individual and collective aspirations, engaging in reflective thinking and generative conversation, and recognizing and managing complexity in the world at large—this book provides practical tools and examples to help libraries lead with insight and impact. More than a theoretical framework, this is a hands-on guide to building a resilient, reflective, and forward-thinking library culture—one conversation, one decision, and one story at a time.
