Supporting Literacies Within the Disciplines

Grounded in the science of reading research, this text equips pre-service and in-service teachers with the practical knowledge and strategies needed to support students as they read, write, listen, speak, and think in the disciplinary classroom. It guides teachers in recognizing the kinds of literacies their discipline demands to better help students engage with discipline-specific content. It provides teachers with the knowledge and tools to analyze text for challenges at all levels, including the sentence level, and how to plan the appropriate instructional support for students. The text introduces the GRACE framework, an easy-to-implement scaffold that helps students navigate the challenges of disciplinary content. GRACE is an acronym for support offered during the three phases of the reading process: - Get Ready (before reading) - Assist (during reading) - Consider and Express (after reading)The framework is designed to be used flexibly to bridge the gap between what students can do on their own and what they can do with some expert help. Chapters feature pre-reading anticipation guides, classroom vignettes, reflection questions, and discipline-specific examples of instructional activities.
