There exist many books of successful trombone teachersexplaining the intricacies of their craft. However, there are fewstudies about what the teaching strategies of these expert teachershave in common. This research was conducted to fill that gap. Threesuccessful American college trombone professors were administeredan extensive interview regarding the basics of teachingundergraduate students. This data was analyzed for commonalities inteaching approach, and the findings revealed not only some of theseexpected similarities, but also some startling and valuabledifferences in teaching approach.
