Bedeutet doch traditionell, die Freundschaft von Vielen zu suchen: auf richtige Freundschaft zu verzichten. Ausgehend von dieser Beobachtung werden im vorliegenden Buch historische und aktuelle Freundschaftssemantik einerseits und netzwerktheoretisches Denken andererseits in ihren spannungsreichen Beziehungen diskutiert. Dabei können Abhängigkeiten der Netzwerk- von älteren Freundschaftskonzepten aufgewiesen werden; und umgekehrt lassen sich freundschaftliche Verhältnisse mit Gewinn im Licht aktueller sozio- und ethnologischer Netzwerktheorien analysieren. Auf diese Weise eröffnet der Band Perspektiven für eine Modernisierung der Sozialgeschichte der Literatur.
