Put on your socks, climb the stairs, and get out of the car with less effort, one simple exercise at a time.

A stiff or sore hip has a way of turning small jobs into decisions. You sit on the edge of the bed to reach your socks. You get out of the car in two careful moves instead of one. You take the stairs one at a time, always leading with the same leg.

Strong Hips After 60 is a practical, illustrated home program that helps you build the hip strength, control, and walking capacity those everyday tasks ask for, at your own pace and without a gym.

Printed in full color in a large 8.5 x 11 inch format, with big, clear illustrations and easy-to-read text, so the book can lie open beside you while you exercise.

Inside, you'll find:

  • 22 clearly illustrated exercises for the buttocks, the side and front of the hip, balance, and walking, each with three levels: Make it easier, Start here, and Build it up
  • An easy 8-week plan that tells you what to do each week, with space to record every session
  • Green, Yellow, Red: a simple check for every exercise that shows when to continue, when to adjust, and when to stop and seek help
  • Four short starting checks (chair rise, walk, one-leg stand, and your own everyday ratings) so you can see your progress in Week 4 and Week 8
  • A clear chapter for readers with a hip replacement, and a note on every exercise that needs your surgical team's agreement
  • Everyday chapters on socks and shoes, getting in and out of the car, stairs and curbs, bed and bath, getting down to the floor and up again, and walking further

Most exercises are done seated or holding a kitchen counter. Floor exercises are optional, and each one has a standing or seated alternative.

There are no complicated workouts, no special equipment, and no promises of a miracle cure. The book is honest about what exercise can and cannot do for a painful hip, and it focuses on what matters most: making ordinary movement easier.

Start where you are. Progress at your own pace. Build strength you can use every day.

Part of the After 60 series by Martha Everly, alongside Strong Knees After 60 and Better Balance After 60.

This book offers general education and graded home exercise and is not a substitute for individual medical advice. Check with your doctor or physical therapist before starting, especially after surgery, a hip or knee replacement, a fall, or a recent injury.
