Excerpt from Seven Somerton Court Rolls So that the seven documents extend over a period of 90 years. I have never seen a document similar to N o. VII. And the Court of the Supervisor is unknown to all the law books that I know. Its sole business was to inquire into the names of the tenants by copy of Court Roll, the extent of their holdings, the rents, heriots and fines due from each and the terms (of years or otherwise) for which they held their lands. Consequently, we have here a record of the farmers in Somerton in the year 1573, and see that the land, other than that in the occupation of the Lord of the Manor, and of a few freeholders (whose existence we deduce from the other documents), was computed at virgates, was divided among 18 persons of whom only three were said to hold cottages.
