The Samburu: A Study of Gerontocracy in a Nomadic Tribe by Paul Spencer offers a rich ethnographic account of a pastoral society in northern Kenya whose political and social life is organized around the authority of elders. Detailed case studies from Pardopa clan, supplemented with comparisons across other clans and neighboring groups, illuminate how polygyny, delayed marriage, and clan corporateness reinforce elder dominance while channeling youthful energies into culturally sanctioned roles.
