RAKTABEEJ: REPUBLIC OF A THOUSAND SHADOWS
A Political Thriller by Dr. Ravindra PastorWhat happens when the truth is buried in an official file, the people responsible are protected by procedure, and every attempt to expose corruption creates another layer of concealment?
The Republic Has a Memory. So Do Its Shadows. In the ancient Indian myth, Raktabeej possesses a terrifying power. Every drop of his blood that touches the earth gives rise to another version of himself. The more violently he is attacked, the more numerous he becomes. Defeating him requires more than strength. It requires an understanding of how his power reproduces itself.
In Raktabeej: Republic of a Thousand Shadows, Dr. Ravindra Pastor transforms this ancient image into a chilling metaphor for modern political life.
Here, Raktabeej is not a supernatural demon. He is a system.
He lives in the unexamined signature, the confidential memorandum, the missing register, the contract awarded without sufficient scrutiny, the data model that turns citizens into risks, and the official certificate declaring a record complete when crucial pages are absent. He survives through institutions that allow responsibility to be divided until nobody appears accountable. He grows whenever fear persuades a witness to remain silent, ambition encourages a politician to exaggerate the truth, or a public servant chooses procedural convenience over moral courage.
Set in the fictional Indian state of Vindhyachal Pradesh, the novel follows a growing investigation into a death that official records have already explained, a disputed government operation, a network of infrastructure contracts, and the proposed expansion of a national coordination framework.
At the centre of the story is Katyayani Rao, a voluntarily retired senior government official who discovers that a file she once certified may contain the evidence of a grave institutional failure. Her search for answers brings her into contact with a former government officer, a doctor who has concealed an important record, journalists pursuing different parts of the same story, a data strategist confronting the consequences of his own work, and a political operator who must choose between a powerful accusation and a defensible one.
Their paths converge around one question:
Can a republic hold itself accountable when the institutions responsible for protecting the public may also have helped conceal the truth?
A File That Should Not ExistRaktabeej: Republic of a Thousand Shadows is not a story of perfect heroes defeating unmistakable villains. It is a story about imperfect people learning that truth requires more than courage. It requires restraint, evidence, transparency, and the willingness to accept accountability.
Because the most dangerous system is not necessarily the one that hides every secret.
It is the one that can turn every failure into another official explanation, every unanswered question into another closed file, and every missing page into a declaration that nothing is missing.
