Practice to Mastery: AP® Comparative Government and Politics Workbook is a complete, unit-by-unit practice program for students preparing for the AP® Comparative Government and Politics Exam or taking a first college course in comparative politics. It contains 583 original questions - 551 multiple choice and 32 free response - organized into five units that follow the College Board's Course and Exam Description, plus one full-length practice examination.
Comparative politics is learned by comparing, so nearly every question is anchored in the six course countries: China, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, and the United Kingdom. Students work with individual questions and with question sets built on tables, author-drawn data figures, excerpts from constitutions and official documents, and original analytical passages, exactly the kinds of material the examination uses. Many items ask students to set two or more countries side by side and explain why their institutions, parties, elections, and policies differ.
The five units cover political systems, regimes, and governments; political institutions; political culture and participation; party and electoral systems and citizen organizations; and political and economic changes and development. Each unit opens with a Topics Covered summary that ties every topic to the six countries. Multiple-choice questions are arranged from Easy to Medium to Hard and tagged by difficulty, so students can see at a glance whether a missed question reflects a gap in basic knowledge or in higher-level comparison and source analysis. Every multiple-choice question has a detailed explanation that teaches the reasoning behind the correct answer.
Free-response practice covers all four examination formats: Conceptual Analysis, Quantitative Analysis, Comparative Analysis, and Argument Essay. Each question comes with a scoring guide built on the examination's point structure and with examples of acceptable responses, so students learn what earns credit for describing, explaining, comparing, and building an argument with evidence from the course countries.
Because AP® Comparative Government examines governments as they operate today, the content was checked against current sources at the time of writing. It reflects recent developments such as the United Kingdom's 2026 change of prime minister without a general election, the selection of a new Supreme Leader in Iran, Russia's 2026 State Duma election, the removal of the remaining hereditary peers from the House of Lords, and Mexico's move to an elected Supreme Court.
The book ends with a full-length practice examination that mirrors the published exam structure: 55 multiple-choice questions in one hour and four free-response questions in one hour and thirty minutes, with a complete answer key, explanations, and scoring guides. None of its questions appears in the units.
All questions, explanations, scoring guides, and figures are original. The content is nonpartisan and presents the political systems of all six countries objectively. Ideal for AP® students, self-studying students, teachers looking for classroom practice, and tutors.
For additional timed practice, the companion volume Practice to Mastery: AP® Comparative Government and Politics Practice Exams offers twelve more full-length examinations with no question repeated from this workbook.
