Origin and Development of the University of California

"Origin and Development of the University of California" provides a comprehensive historical account of one of America's premier public institutions of higher learning. Written by William Warren Ferrier, this work meticulously traces the evolution of the university from its foundational roots and early legislative efforts in the mid-19th century through its significant expansion into the early 20th century.

The book explores the intellectual and social climate that gave birth to the institution, documenting the roles of key figures, the establishment of the Berkeley campus, and the broader mission of providing accessible, high-quality education to the citizens of California. Ferrier offers detailed insights into the university's structural growth, its academic milestones, and its integration into the cultural fabric of the West Coast. This volume serves as an essential resource for those interested in the history of education, the development of the American land-grant university system, and the specific legacy of the University of California. It captures the spirit of academic ambition and the strategic planning required to build a world-class educational system from the ground up.
