She fought an empire for forty years, ruled two kingdoms, and traded in slaves. The real history of Njinga is stranger than the legend - and no metaphor does it justice.

Njinga of Ndongo and Matamba (c. 1581-1663) is one of the most mythologised figures in African history. She has been painted as a warrior queen, a saint, a monster and a motivational symbol. This book sets the legend aside and tells the documented story: a serious, readable narrative history of a formidable ruler and the world that produced her.

Here is seventeenth-century west central Africa on its own terms - the kingdoms of Kongo and Ndongo, how authority and religion actually worked, the arrival of the Portuguese and the slow slide from trade to conquest, the founding of Luanda, and the Atlantic slave trade as the organizing economic fact of the entire region.

And here is Njinga herself: the contested succession, the famous embassy of 1622 and the truth about the chair, the wars that destroyed her, the Imbangala alliance that saved her and cost her, the conquest of Matamba, the Dutch alliance that nearly ended Portuguese Angola, the long war and the treaty she finally won, her Christianity and the argument about it, and her death at eighty-one still on the throne.

This book does not sanitize. Njinga's kingdoms participated in, profited from and fought over the Atlantic slave trade. That is stated plainly, in context, without excusing her and without reducing her to it.

WHAT'S INSIDE

- Sixteen chapters of narrative history, from the region before the caravels to Njinga's global afterlife

- A clear account of what the sources actually say - and who wrote them, and what each of them wanted

- The chair scene, the atrocity stories and the famous anecdotes examined rather than repeated

- The slave trade treated honestly, including Njinga's own participation

- The Dutch occupation of Luanda and the wider Atlantic war that reached Angola

- The argument about her conversions: sincerity, statecraft, or a question wrongly posed

- A full chronology, a glossary of names, places and terms, and a guide to the open questions historians still dispute

- Further reading for anyone who wants to go to the sources
