Night Audit

At 11:58 on a Tuesday night, the phone at the front desk rings from a room the system says is empty. Forty-one seconds. Nobody speaks.

Faye Lang has run the night audit at a sixty-eight-room hotel off the interstate east of Columbus for four years without a number out of place. Just after midnight her count is wrong by one: the record shows forty guests, and the building slept forty-one. The forty-first was keyed one wall from her desk, cancelled five minutes into her own shift on a login she shares, and paid in cash so exact the drawer still counts perfect. The guest field holds the one name she never says aloud - her own. The legal one.

Nothing is missing. That is the menace of it.

Corporate's audit team sits down at her desk at eight. A quiet fix waits at her own keyboard, and no one would ever look again. But Faye has one rule: touch nothing, document everything. So she counts, prints, and walks the halls, building a record that grows truer by the hour - while it points, page by page, at the one total she chose not to look at, and the signature she has been paying off ever since.

One desk. One night. Every line of the ledger holds - except the line wearing her name.

Complete in itself. No cliffhanger.
