Basierend auf Technologien wie dem IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), als Erweiterung bestehender Mobilfunknetzwerke (2G, 3G), und dem Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) entstehen neue Wege für multimediale Dienste. Im Zuge des Buches wurde eine Anwendung für mobile Endgeräte entwickelt, welche unter Verwendung von SIP und HTTP in einem Mobilfunknetz kommuniziert und dem Benutzer verschiedene Dienste bietet. Der Autor gibt einführend einen Überblick über die zentralen Begrifflichkeiten von Datendiensten sowie der generellen Problematik von IP-basierter Kommunikation in Mobilfunknetzen. Er geht auf die verwendeten Basistechnologien mit Fokus auf SIP, HTTP und SDP näher ein. Außerdem werden die Möglichkeiten bei der Entwicklung von mobilen IMS- Anwendungen gezeigt und eine Einführung in mobile Plattformen gegeben. Es werden sowohl die theoretischen Konzepte als auch die Kernaspekte der Implementierung gezeigt, bevor eine Analyse der Ergebnisse das Buch im letzten Kapitel abrundet.
