This is the eighth collection in Hong Zeng's series of short stories. It is poetic, philosophical, and tinged with magical realism. All stories derive their core ideas and central images from the author's own creative poetry. This series can be categorized in the genre of science fiction.

"Eyes on the Birch Trees" is a science fiction novel that blends speculative fiction, mystery, and existential inquiry. Through a restrained, atmospheric narrative, it constructs a silent city woven from memory, information, and consciousness, unraveling layer upon layer of mystery while exploring the nature of identity, memory, and the self.

In "Protocol of the Water of Lethe", the city is a visualization of Lin Zhiyao's mind. Streets represent neural pathways, buildings store memories, and structural collapse reflects psychological instability. As her understanding grows, the city stabilizes, mirroring emotional integration. The story suggests that memory is not a burden to erase but a bond that shapes identity, love, and responsibility.

"Memories of the Earth" explores how memory outlives individuals and civilizations, suggesting that while humans forget and disappear, the Earth quietly absorbs every life, place, and moment into its own endless memory.

The motifs of "Dream of Butterfly" explore the hidden connections between reality, perception, and existence. Recurring images such as mirrors, leaf veins, water reflections, butterflies, and city networks represent the same underlying structure appearing in different forms. The story questions the role of the observer, showing that while humans believe they are discovering reality, they may also be shaped and observed by it. It explores themes of identity, time, memory, and the uncertainty between illusion and truth.

The motif of "Overview Effect" is the transformation of human perception when one experiences the world from a larger, more complete perspective. Through Lin Xu's journey, the story explores how seeing the interconnectedness of all events, people, and systems challenges ordinary ideas of meaning, identity, and certainty.

"High-Dimensional Vision of Trees" explores the limitation of human perception and the possibility of seeing reality beyond ordinary dimensions. Through ants, snails, trees, and stars, the story explores the idea that humans may perceive only a small "slice" of a larger structure, mistaking movement for change and sequence for time itself.

Hong Zeng holds two PhDs in literature and served as a professor of literature at Carleton College and Hamline University in the United States for thirteen years. She is the author of five books of literary criticism published in America, dozens of critical essays, and a bilingual poetry collection in English and Chinese.
