The family photograph that should have eleven people in it, and does not. The boy he has started quietly watching, without telling anyone why, and without knowing yet if he is right to hope.
I do not have a clean word for what a man like this carries. I am not sure he does either.
This book contains no rituals, no mantras, and no instructions. What it contains is six weeks inside a life most people only hear about secondhand, told by the one person who finally let someone close enough to ask what it actually costs.
