In formal learning environments, the development of autonomy is pursued because learner autonomy supports the learners' involvement in planning, monitoring and evaluating their own learning (Holec, 1981). t is generally associated with long-term success because it enables learners to apply the school knowledge and skills to situations in the outside world (Little, 2001).
