WEYMOUTH'S MODERN SPEECH COMPANION TRANSLATION
Now Side-by-Side with the 1611 Authorised Version
Four centuries ago, the King James translators declared that their work was a revision, blessed future scholars, and asked the question: "Is the kingdom of God words or syllables? Why should we be in bondage to them if we may be free?" In 1903, Richard Francis Weymouth's New Testament in Modern Speech answered that call.
Weymouth was not a revision committee. One English scholar built the translation as a study companion to the Authorised Version and the 1881 Revised Version. The Greek under the English is the Resultant Greek Testament of 1886, the reading on which the majority of the editors Weymouth collated were agreed. James Clarke published the book in 1903, the year after Weymouth's death. Ernest Hampden-Cook edited and partly revised the manuscript. The result is modern English from that Greek-not a King James patch, and not a paraphrase.
The dual-column layout sets the 1912 third-edition wording directly beside the classic 1769 Oxford King James text. A reader can test both lines on the same verse.
Who Needs The Parallel Edition:Read a chapter in the King James column first. Next, read the same chapter in the 1912 column. Then read across, verse by verse. When the modern wording turns a verse known by heart, weigh both lines. The parallel columns let a reader judge which English stays with the familiar cadence, and which English gives the sense of the Greek.
The evidence sits on the page. See the differences, weigh the cadences, and decide on the line.
