In the winter of 1077, an emperor stood barefoot in the snow outside a mountain fortress, fasting for three days and begging a pope for forgiveness. It is one of the most striking images in medieval history, and it reveals something essential about the world this book explores: an age in which the Roman Catholic Church held more power over kings, commoners, and consciences than most modern readers can easily imagine.

This book tells the story of that world, and of the man who dared to challenge it. Before John Wycliffe became known to history as the Morning Star of the Reformation, he was simply a second son of Yorkshire sheep farmers, sent on a two hundred mile walk to Oxford at the age of fourteen because his family's small farm would never be his to inherit. What he encountered there, and what he came to believe after decades of study, would eventually place him in direct conflict with the pope, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the entire theological foundation of the medieval church.

Readers will follow Wycliffe from his rural childhood through the devastation of the Black Death, which killed nearly half of England and shook public confidence in the institutions meant to protect their souls. They will witness his entanglement in royal politics, his dramatic and unfinished trial in London, his formal excommunication, and his defiant completion of the first full English translation of the Bible, an act forbidden by church law and punishable by the loss of a family's land, life, and possessions for generations. Along the way, this book also examines the broader medieval world that shaped him: the crusades fought both against foreign enemies and against fellow Christians, the doctrine of purgatory that governed how ordinary people understood life and death, and the extraordinary confrontation between Pope Gregory VII and Emperor Henry IV that revealed the true limits of earthly power.

This is narrative history written for readers who want more than a list of dates and names. It explores why medieval people believed what they believed, how those beliefs shaped the decisions of kings and commoners alike, and how one scholar's conviction that scripture belonged to everyone, not just the clergy, planted an idea that would outlive him by more than a century. Readers interested in the origins of the Protestant Reformation, the history of the English Bible, or the broader story of medieval Christianity will find here a clear and human account of where that story truly begins.

John Wycliffe did not live to see the Reformation his ideas would eventually inspire. But the light he lit, however dim it seemed against the power arrayed against him, never fully went out. This book tells you why.
