How to Draw Ornaments

How to Draw Ornaments by Vault Editions draws on one of the great instructional works of the Victorian era, Charles Cusack's Freehand Ornament, first published in London in 1895. Cusack's method is unique in that each ornament is broken down into its underlying geometry, beginning with basic shapes and construction lines, before building through a structured three-stage process to the fully resolved design. This approach makes even the most complex decorative forms approachable, teaching you not just what ornament looks like but how it is constructed from first principles.

This collection brings together 136 of Cusack's finest compositions, carefully restored for the modern artist and designer. Foliage scrolls and floral flourishes, classical acanthus and palmette forms, Celtic knotwork and interlacing patterns, Gothic and Renaissance motifs, architectural elements including friezes, capitals and panels, and elegant corner and border embellishments are all represented here, covering the full vocabulary of Western ornamental tradition.

Whether you are an illustrator seeking refined decorative detail, a graphic designer working with historical motifs, a tattoo artist exploring classical linework, or a student of ornamental drawing, this collection offers an extraordinary depth of source material drawn from one of the most comprehensive ornament guides ever assembled.
