Alfred B Crabtree and Hattie B Martin's HANCOCK 1828-1928 continues in the vein of Thomas Foss's A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE EARLY SETTLEMENTS ALONG THE SHORES OF SKILLING'S RIVER in sharing the history of the Town of Hancock, Maine. A Centennial Committee was established in 1927 to plan observances for the town's centennial in 1928. Alfred B Crabtree, chairman of the committee, and Hattie B Martin, committee member, compiled HANCOCK 1828-1928 to provide a brief, entertaining history of the town during it's first 100 years.
From the foreword of Hancock 1828-1928:
"In this book we write of the history of the Town of
Hancock. Our story is largely one of the past. Although
largely historical we do not present it as a complete history
of the town; but rather as a book to be read for enter-
tainment. Care has been taken to write the authentic
facts as far as history is brought into the work, and for
many of these facts, we give credit to a book written in
1870 by Thomas Foss, copies of which are now scarce."
Due to the age and condition of the original printed material, a full transcription has been include alongside the images of the original pages.
HANCOCK 1828-1928 is presented by the Hancock Historical Society, to preserve and promote local history for future generations.
