Pauline Schloesser examines the lives and writings of three key women of the period - Mercy Otis Warren, Abigall Smith Adams, and Judith Sargent Murray - each of whom was acutely aware of their tenuous position in the founding era of the republic. In their public and private actions they represent the conflict of being a white woman, of being the recipient of both privilege and discrimination. This important book sheds light on a previously unknown chapter in race and gender relations in the early American Republic.
