Before Rome ruled Italy, the Etruscans did. They built hilltop cities, traded metals and wine across the Mediterranean, painted their tombs with banquets and music, and gave Rome its early kings, its temple building and some of its rituals. Then Rome absorbed them, and their own books were lost.
This illustrated history follows the evidence from the Villanovan villages to the last Etruscan inscriptions: Tarquinia, Cerveteri, Veii and Populonia, homes and food, women and craft, omens and tombs, the Pyrgi Tablets, a language only partly understood and the story of rediscovery. It treats competing theories fairly and keeps them separate from what tombs, inscriptions and excavations can prove.
Each of its seventy chapters ends with The Historian's Verdict, which grades what is well established, probable, disputed or unknown. Appendices give a timeline, the people in the book, a reader's guide to the evidence, a glossary, Etruscan words and names, and places to visit.
The evidence is laid out. The reader decides.
