Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a Christian dissident who took a stand against Nazism in the 1930s. He was executed at the Flossenburg concentration camp just before the end of the war on the charge of treason, but in truth he died for sheer love of his country and for his uncompromising commitment to the gospel. In response to what he regarded as the capitulation of the evangelical church to volk nationalism, Bonhoeffer helped establish the Confessing Church and, controversially, became implicated in an assassination plot against Hitler.
Encountering Bonhoffer takes the reader on a forty-day journey via some key passages from Bonhoeffer's extensive body of work--books, essays, letters, sermons, poems--in the hope that it will encourage not just personal reflection on themes in the gospel but also a deeper awareness of the church's mission in a time of political and global instability.
