Danielle Rottimer cleans teeth. Her husband Nicholas sells trucks. They have two kids, a yellow lab, and a house with pencil marks on the kitchen wall.
They are nobody. That is the point.
The last ordinary thing Danielle ever does is reach for a cold french fry. Then the dash lights up, the radio dies mid-word, and her SUV stops being a machine at sixty-two miles an hour.
Every engine in America stops with it.
Nicholas knows something almost nobody else does: the old machines are not broken. A 1968 Ford still runs. A diesel tractor still runs. There is water under this town, and he has a nineteen-year list of every old vehicle in the county.
So the Rottimers survive by giving things away, in the open, where the whole street can see.
Then Danielle's best friend arrives with a split lip and a black eye, and the man who put them there walks in behind her. Charming. Patient. Never quite wrong about anything.
He has already found the crawlspace.
He will not break the door down. He will get the town to open it for him.
