35 years of political tranquility followed the failure of Chartism. This book asks why there was no significant political or social unrest in Britain in this period, when social upheaval occurred in many continental European countries in 1848. It suggests that this can be largely ascribed to the success of new social, cultural and religious movements for the working class, which were promoted and often managed by the new rich. In order to explain the general course of popular radicalism in the post-chartist period, this study looks specifically at Manchester to give some sense of the precise nature of working class consciousness.
