Die Werke Kafkas und Döblins verhandeln auf je eigene Weise die krisenhaften Machtstrukturen in einer Zeit, in der sich nach Foucault erstmalig das Biologische im Politischen reflektiert . Gemeint ist jene gezielte politische Einflussnahme auf die biologischen Körper zwecks Steuerung der Bevölkerung. Im Zentrum der Strafkolonie Kafkas steht ein grotesker Hinrichtungsapparat, der tödliche Zeichen in den Körper einschreibt und zugleich als Instrument der Disziplin wie der Vivisektion und Statistik fungiert. Deutet sich die neuartige Biomacht hier bereits an, kommt sie in Döblins Dystopie Berge Meere und Giganten zur vollen Entfaltung: Der destruktive Fortschritt, begleitet von Dehumanisierung und Vermassung, zeigt sich etwa in Form makabrer Menschenversuche oder einer eugenisch motivierten Geburtenkontrolle. Diese Arbeit untersucht den Paradigmenwechsel der modernen Macht in der literarischen Darstellung im Rückgriff auf Foucaults Diskursanalyse und weitere theoretische Schriften.
