Eine wichtige Strategie ist das Versprechen von Fortschritt und Modernisierung für die kolonisierten Völker, eine andere die Aussicht auf Frieden und Wohlstand für Zentrum und Peripherie. Diese imperialen Vorstellungen haben bis heute Konjunktur, wie etwa die Debatte um "gerechte Kriege" zeigt. In diesem Kontext bietet der Band einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Verständnis auch gegenwärtiger politischer Prozesse.
