Der Autor des vorliegenden Bandes Ernst Förstemann (1822-1906) war ein deutscher Archivar, Bibliothekar und Historiker. Mit seinem Werk Die deutschen Ortsnamen\" (1863) wurde er zum Begründer einer systematischen deutschen Ortsnamenkunde. Mit seinem Plädoyer für die Nutzung der numerischen Methode (= Sprachstatistik) und den statistischen Erhebungen unterschiedlicher sprachlicher Phänomene (Laute, grammatische Phänomene, Namen) ist Förstemann einer der Wegbereiter der Sprachstatistik und damit der Quantitativen Linguistik. Einer der längsten Ortsnamen in Deutschland in einem Wort ist Gschlachtenbretzingen (21), der in Verbindung mit dem Namen des Hauptortes Michelbach an der Bilz-Gschlachtenbretzingen (40) länger ist als jeder andere Ortsname in Deutschland. Noch länger sind Gotthelffriedrichsgrund (23), Name eines Ortsteils der Gemeinde Reinsberg in Mittelsachsen und Schmedeswurtherwesterdeich (26 Buchstaben), Ortsteil der Gemeinde Schmedeswurth im Kreis Dithmarschen.
