"The construction of an independent Chinese knowledge system represents a reflective engagement with-and a critical dialogue against-the overwhelmingly dominant Western social science theoretical framework that has prevailed since modern times. The foundation of any knowledge system lies in its concepts; therefore, the fundamental work of building an independent knowledge system is to fully refine and articulate those defining concepts with strong explanatory power that have emerged from China's traditional historical experience in political, economic, and cultural domains.
The so-called ""defining concepts"" are distinct from ordinary everyday vocabulary, nor are they mere reiterations of already established and widely accepted definitions within the academic community. Rather, they refer to concepts that have originated in the course of indigenous historical, cultural, and political evolution, have entered academic discourse, and have been widely adopted-possessing strong explanatory validity and enduring vitality.
