Davis Mountain Massacre

The Davis Mountains were the site of some of Texas' earliest vineyards. As Professor Trevor Talan travels through west Texas to visit a new vineyard project at the base of the mountains, he finds himself in the middle of Texas history. The revival of the Republic of Texas had begun. Rebels maintained that the annexation of Texas was unconstitutional because a territory requires a two-thirds majority vote in the Senate, and it only received a simple majority. Mexico never recognized Texas independence. This controversy led to the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848 and remains today in the hearts of Republic of Texas supporters.

Frontiersmen were gathering, barricades were being erected, and Ft. Davis braced for attack. Trevor was greeted with "Welcome to the Republic!" Flags were flying to celebrate the Republic of Texas. Campfires were ablaze and a joyful group of people sang as they worked. Grief and Joy can walk hand in hand. The massacre of the Davis Mountains will go down in history as one of the bloodiest domestic terrorism episodes in Texas history. Although many Texans express their desire for Texas to be a 'whole other country', Texas remains a bright star to the nation, standing for free spirit, independence, and state pride.
