CYBER MEMORIES: THE SEED PHRASE
In this future, memory isn't kept. It's carried - on a wafer, through a slot behind your ear, into whoever's willing to pay.
Every mind in this world runs on hardware. A neural link, threaded in at adolescence, ports flush against the skull - corporate chrome for the rich, whining municipal steel for everyone else. Slide a wafer into the slot and a stranger's entire inner life plays through your own neurons: their fears in your throat, their grief behind your eyes, their childhood running on your own private hardware like it was always yours. It's how the dead get sold. It's how the living get comforted. It's the biggest trade on the continent - and Reyes Okafor-Lin has spent eleven years as its most trusted instrument, the auditor whose ear can catch a single counterfeit syllable in eleven thousand certified estates.
Then a thirteen-syllable sentence surfaces where it has no right to be - buried in a dead stranger's signature, worn smooth with twenty-three years of use he never should have had - and Reyes finds herself hunting something the trade has no name for: a piece of language that doesn't just get remembered. It travels. Port to port, wafer to wafer, breeding new comfort out of borrowed grief, patient and undetectable and utterly alive.
The chase takes her off the grid and into the business district under the old rail viaducts, where black-market techs strip contraband seeds out of stolen wafers on air-gapped rigs that touch no network at all. It takes her up forty silent floors of a tower that owns the archive, the auction house, and the courts that are supposed to police them both - where a believer with a spotless collector's case is quietly engineering the next stage of human intimacy, one purchased childhood at a time. And it takes her back to a corroded municipal port and a housing block on the wrong side of the canal, where the sentence - and the boy who first whispered it into the dark - has been waiting the whole time for someone to finally plug in and listen.
This is a world where your most private thought is a licensed commodity, your own memories can be audited for authenticity, and the line between comforted and colonized runs through a length of solid-state media the size of a fingernail.
In this future, memory isn't kept. It's licensed.
She audits the dead for a living. She just found herself in the evidence.
______
Cyber memories are memories stored from the minds of the living. These cyber memories are bought and sold on storage devices called wafers, which can be viewed and integrated into minds by inserting them into cybernetic ports that interface with the human mind. The cybernetic input temporal-slot is located on the side of the head. The Cyber memories of the dead are often audited by auditors. A professional auditor, Reyes Okafor-Lin, discovers a familiar seed phrase located within several cyber memories. She discovers that the seed phrase is a strain found within several audits of the dead's own memories. Reyes traces the origins of the seed phrase to her childhood. This leads her to question Cortessa, the auditing company she works for, as she discovers the whereabouts of her long-lost brother, Tomas.

A high-tech, high-stakes cyberpunk mystery about what happens when the last unowned thing left in the world is a single, stolen sentence - for readers of Black Mirror, Blade Runner, and Neuromancer.
